Symbol System Download
Designed using Adobe CS6 Illustrator and InDesign.
The Assignment: As a study to gain an in-depth understanding of how symbol systems work as a collective whole and on an individual level, I selected an established symbol system and then created a new symbol to communicate an idea not already included in the system, but would be appropriate for the system’s subject matter. After the symbol design was complete, I created a process book to detail my design process.
The Symbol: After examining a large variety of symbol systems, I selected Creative Cursor House’s Business and Web icon set to work from. To understand how the system works as a whole, I identified the unifying factors of the symbols; then, to understand how the system works on the individual level, I identified what each symbol represented and other ideas that would fit in with the system but were not at the time included. Several rounds of sketching and critiquing of these ideas ensued, leading to the selection of the concept “download”. Moving to Adobe Illustrator, vector rounds and more critiquing followed until the final result was reached.
The Process Book: After completing the symbol, I created a process book to detail the research and development that went into the symbol’s design. It contains sketches, a design matrix, and extensive project notes. Additionally, it has my symbol set within the original system, demonstrating how well it fits in with the established system. The book is printed on a semi-gloss cover weight paper. Pages are French folded and the the entire piece is bound with a 1/2″ silver double-o ring.
